1.0 ABSTRACTThis paper discusses the role of financial inclusion in the reduction of poverty and outlines the vision of any country which wishes to reduce poverty using financial inclusiont. It first examines changing views about poverty and the design of poverty alleviation programs, both in Zambia and the developing countries at large. It claims that financial services can play a role in financial inclusion by incorporating the poor in processes of economic growth.
The paper focuses on the poor, non-institutionalized and socially classified as mentally challenged people who roam the streets of Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, Nigeria. It is a down-to- earth study and observation of this group of people in the habitat they have been forced to accept as “normal.” It addresses the issue of mental illness as a social construction.Page 1 of 11
